Dim Sum Capital
Guangzhou is known as one of the food capitals of the world. Excluding the entirety of Cantonese cuisine and the centuries-old brand-name restaurants of the region, Cantonese dim sum alone is already well-known across the globe.
The term “Cantonese dim sum”, on a base level, refers to a group of cuisine consisting of snacks from the Lingnan region. On a wider level, it includes pastries from other regions and confectionery techniques from the west, thus forming its own unique branch of cuisine. Cantonese, Beijing, and Jiangsu dim sum make up the three major types of dim sum in China. Using a conservative estimate, Cantonese dim sum consists of more than a thousand different dishes, making it the primary type of dim sum in China by a large margin. Among these dishes, shrimp dumplings, shumai, char siu bao (BBQ pork buns), and Cantonese egg tarts are known as the “four heavenly kings”, as they are the most popular and iconic Cantonese dim sum snacks.
